Yesterday I went to a two hours workshop to learn more about Positive Psychology. I would like to share some interesting points with you.
Positive Psychology is a recent field of study that initiated in 1998. Since then multiple scientific studies have been conducted to discover and promote factors that allow individuals and communities to thrive. Have you already heard of the « flourishing revolution » ? You certainly are familiar with some tools that can be used to enhance your level of happiness. Happiness is a very fashionable theme these days. But what does it mean concretely on a personal level ?
The idea is to achieve “personal mastery ” through self awareness, self compassion and self care.
If you think of self care for example it help prevent states that have a toll on your mental and physical health.
Of course we are partly genetically determined but research shows that even if 50 % is genetical, and 10% situational (outside events that we don’t master) we still have 40% to work on which is good news !
We all have a set point of happiness with variations around it linked to particular moments (falling in love, deceased relative, etc.). It is quite encouraging to learn that we can raise this set point by changing our habits. Yes, it requires some work but we can boost our level of happiness as a whole.
What areas can you voluntarily work on ?
- You can work on your degree of satisfaction about your past through gratitude and forgiveness
- You can act on your optimism about the future
- You can deal with your happiness about the present
Unfortunately there is a big difference between knowing what would be good for you and actually working on changing your habits. Positive Psychology proposes different tools to work on what you think, feel and do.
Of course change doesn’t come easy to human beings but the reward is exciting. If you take action, choose the tools that work for you and find somebody who can help you be accountable for your goals, it will be much easier to reach more happiness.
If you are interested about positive psychology I can put you in contact with Nancy Bonamy who organised the workshop and propose different sessions to learn about a variety of tools and how to use them or we might even organize one session at IMFFA in autumn if enough members are interested.
